The Presidency has sharply criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for demanding a United Nations-led investigation into the abduction of 39 pupils and six teachers in the state, describing the request as unnecessary, politically motivated, and indicative of a lack of confidence in Nigeria’s security institutions.
Governor Makinde made the call on Monday while assuming responsibility for the welfare, rehabilitation, and education of the 45 rescued victims, who spent 56 days in captivity after being abducted on May 15, 2026, from schools in Oriire Local Government Area.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the governor’s demand was unwarranted, noting that the military and other security agencies had already provided detailed explanations about the rescue operation.
“The Governor has just expressed his opinion that the UN should probe this incident. Our doors are open. Let the UN come if he thinks there is more to it than what our military has explained,” Onanuga stated.
He emphasised that the rescue operation claimed the lives of security personnel, including soldiers and Amotekun operatives, and dismissed any suggestion of deliberate collusion or negligence.
Onanuga accused Makinde whom he described as a presidential aspirant of playing politics and attempting to “weaponise” the tragic incident.
Makinde, however, insisted that his call for international scrutiny was not meant to undermine local institutions but to establish the full facts, ensure accountability, and restore public confidence.
He stressed that Nigerians deserve transparency regarding the circumstances of the abduction and its resolution.
The victims were formally handed over to the Oyo State Government on Monday and are receiving medical and psychological support. The governor assured them of continued state assistance for their full recovery.
