Senate Approves N404bn Police Trust Fund Budgets for 2025, 2026

The Nigerian Senate has approved a combined budget of N404.07 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), endorsing its expenditure plans for 2025 and 2026 to strengthen policing, security operations, and infrastructure nationwide.

The allocation includes N170.10 billion for 2025 and N233.96 billion for 2026, following the adoption of a report presented by Senator Yunus Akintunde on behalf of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs.

Akintunde explained that the 2025 budget had to be resubmitted after legal disputes delayed its earlier implementation.

He noted that amendments to the Police Trust Fund Act had stalled spending for nearly three years.Senator Abdul Ningi emphasized the importance of the fund in bridging financial gaps within the Nigeria Police Force, urging strict accountability in the use of appropriated funds.

Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno praised the 2026 budget structure, highlighting that over 90 percent was dedicated to capital projects.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, commended the committee’s work and expressed optimism that the funds would enhance the police’s capacity to combat insecurity, including kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism.

The approval comes shortly after the Senate passed the Police Trust Fund Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2026, which strengthens the fund’s legal framework and increases its statutory allocation from 0.5 percent to 1 percent of revenue accruing to the Federation Account.
