Court Orders Police to Pay N100m Over Killing of Delta Youth

A Federal High Court in Calabar has awarded N100 million in damages against the Nigeria Police Force and several senior officers over the killing of 22-year-old Onyekachi Mba at the Delta Government House.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu delivered the ruling on Thursday, July 9, in a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by the victim’s mother, Mrs. Victoria Mba, through her lawyer, Chief Roland Ndubuka.

The suit, instituted in October 2025, sought redress for violations of Mba’s constitutional rights, including liberty, dignity, and freedom of movement.

The court found that Mba’s torture and fatal shooting by police personnel attached to the residence of Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu on August 1, 2025, amounted to unlawful conduct and a gross abuse of power. Justice Ojukwu described the officers’ actions as “executive recklessness.”

The respondents in the case included the Nigeria Police Force, ASP Victor Edet, the Cross River State Commissioner of Police, the Police Service Commission, and SP Emmanuel Dickson, Chief Security Officer at the Government House.

Mba was allegedly beaten and shot by police officers before succumbing to his injuries at the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital in Calabar.

The court ordered that the N100 million compensation be paid jointly or individually by the respondents.
