Presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala has sharply criticized Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing him of fostering a movement of “political extremists” and failing to take responsibility for the actions of some of his supporters.
Bwala made the comments during an appearance on TVC’s Politics programme on Sunday, while addressing ongoing criticism of the former Anambra State governor.
He rejected suggestions that he is personally obsessed with Obi, insisting that his responses are typically prompted by statements from Obi’s supporters that generate media inquiries.
“Every time, his people are the first to talk, the media houses will ask us to react. But the narrative peddled by the media is as if we wake up from sleep and we are looking for Peter Obi,” Bwala said.
Bwala further downplayed Obi’s political significance, stating that he poses no real threat to President Bola Tinubu.
“Obi is inconsequential… Peter Obi is not a match to Asiwaju. All the governors that have governed in Lagos have all done better than Peter Obi. So, Peter Obi is not a match,” he remarked.
However, the presidential aide claimed that Obi has introduced a “dangerous phenomenon” into Nigerian politics.
He alleged that Obi is building a movement comparable in risk to banditry, citing recent incidents where some supporters allegedly spread false reports of his death.When pressed to clarify his earlier comparison of “Obidients” to bandits, Bwala clarified that he was referring to political extremism. “They are political extremists,” he stated.
Bwala pointed to an incident involving an Obidient supporter who faced backlash after meeting Seyi Tinubu, son of the President.
He alleged that Obi later met with the individual and shifted blame to the opposition.
“He has never accepted the responsibility of the conduct of his people. He has always said it is the opposition,” Bwala added.
The accusations reflect ongoing tensions between supporters of the ruling party and Obi’s political movement ahead of the 2027 elections.
