The Kano State Police Command has successfully concluded a one-month intensive training programme in combat readiness and weapon handling for 200 officers, aimed at boosting their operational effectiveness and enhancing service delivery in the state.
The passing-out ceremony took place on Monday at the No. 9 Police Mobile Force Squadron in Hotoro, Kano. Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Bakori, represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police Audu Sabo (Finance and Administration), said the training was designed to equip personnel with modern policing and tactical skills needed to address current security threats.
The programme aligns with directives from Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who has emphasised continuous capacity building for officers. Training was conducted at No. 9 PMF, Hotoro, and No. 52 PMF, Challawa.
Participants received both practical and theoretical instruction in areas including weapon handling, tactical manoeuvres, intelligence-led policing, community policing, public relations, and human rights.
“Capacity building is not an event; it is a process. It must be continuous if we must win the battle against crime and earn the trust of the people,” Bakori stated. He urged the graduating officers to uphold professionalism and discipline, adding that the command plans to roll out similar trainings for more personnel.
“Our approach is simple: be hard on crime and soft on the people. We must remain combat-ready to confront criminals while respecting the rights of law-abiding citizens,” he added.Commanding Officer of No. 9 PMF Squadron, ACP Afeez Oyekan, highlighted that the officers were rigorously drilled in modern weapon handling, marksmanship, combat tactics, and tactical manoeuvres. They also attended lectures on human rights, police-public relations, intelligence-led policing, crowd control, community policing, and the Force’s social media policy.
“A good police officer must be professionally mindful of his firearm at all times, exercise good judgment and discharge his duties with the fear of God,” Oyekan said. He encouraged the officers to apply their new skills responsibly and respectfully towards the public.
The event included combat demonstrations, certificate presentations, and awards for top performers in categories such as shooting range proficiency, firearm stripping and assembly, and overall performance. Awardees included Corporal Aminu Ahmed, Police Constable Umar Idris, Corporal Nasiru Ubale, and Police Constable Ismail Abubakar, among others.
This initiative reflects the police command’s commitment to building a more professional and responsive force in Kano State.
