Professor Wole Alamu, husband of Mrs. Rachael Alamu, the Oyo State school principal who spent more than 50 days in captivity after being abducted with pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, has shared how he coped during the ordeal.
Speaking during a thanksgiving service after his wife’s release, Alamu disclosed that he eventually blocked the kidnappers’ phone numbers because their repeated threats were destabilising his health.
“You cannot kill me here and kill her there. Choose one. If you want to take her, she is going to be with Christ. You cannot kill the two of us at the same time,” he recounted.
He explained that constant communication with the abductors left him emotionally drained and battling high blood pressure.
At one point, he was unable to complete a medical check-up because a threatening message from the kidnappers spiked his blood pressure.
Alamu described the abduction as the greatest challenge his family had ever faced, disrupting their quiet life of academics and Christian service.
He expressed gratitude for the swift response of security agencies, noting that within an hour of the incident, helicopters were already combing the forest.
The professor also revealed that the kidnappers confronted his wife after he blocked them, leaving a cutlass beside her in an apparent attempt to push her toward suicide.
Mrs. Alamu, however, boldly resisted, telling them: “I will not kill myself and you too will not kill me.”Alamu said the crisis drew support from across Nigeria and abroad, with calls from California and Los Angeles, as well as offers of assistance from NGOs.
He urged Christians to remain steadfast, stressing that trials reveal the true depth of one’s faith.Quoting Psalm 126, he concluded: “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.”
