Nigeria’s First Manufacturing University Innovation Pod launched at MOUAU, Abia State

Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod (Manu-Tech UniPod) was formally inaugurated on Monday at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State.

The groundbreaking project is a collaboration between the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and the Abia State Government.

Speaking at the launch, Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by the Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, said the UniPod underscores the government’s commitment to repositioning higher education as a driver of innovation, entrepreneurship, research commercialization, and job creation.

“This initiative represents far more than the commissioning of another university facility. It is the unveiling of a broad national vision that positions our universities as agents of industrial transformation, innovation, enterprise creation, and sustainable economic development,” he said.

Shettima reaffirmed the Federal Government’s resolve to build an education system that nurtures talent, accelerates industrialisation, and contributes to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s goal of achieving a $1 trillion Nigerian economy by 2030.

Governor Alex Otti, in his keynote address titled Science Meets Enterprise, said the siting of the UniPod in Abia reflects confidence in the state’s potential as an engine of growth and prosperity. He noted that the project demonstrates tangible results of the trust reposed in Abia by both the Federal Government and UNDP.

UN Assistant Secretary-General Ahunna Eziakonwa described the UniPod as a platform to unlock Africa’s youth potential, where “engineering meets art, business meets social enterprise, and diversity of thought becomes the greatest asset.”

UNDP Nigeria’s Resident Representative, Elsie Attafuah, added that the launch is part of a larger plan to mobilize $1 billion to build Africa’s biggest innovation ecosystem—supporting 10,000 startups, scaling 1,000 high-growth ventures, improving livelihoods for over 100 million people, and generating $10 billion in value across the continent within the next decade.

MOUAU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ursala Akanwa, described the commissioning as a defining moment in the institution’s history, aligning with its mandate to deploy science, technology, and innovation in advancing agriculture, manufacturing, and enterprise development.
