The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have announced plans to jointly monitor broadcast content during the 2027 general elections to curb unethical practices and promote responsible coverage.
NBC Director-General, Charles Ebuebu, disclosed the initiative in Abuja, explaining that the collaboration would leverage advanced technology to strengthen election monitoring.
“Gone are the days where agencies work in silos. When we coordinate, we’re able to monitor more effectively,” he said.
Ebuebu noted that the partnership would allow both agencies to address violations collectively, while also engaging other stakeholders such as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
Agreements with these bodies are expected to be signed before the elections.He revealed that NBC is upgrading its facilities with artificial intelligence tools to track thousands of broadcast and online platforms, adding that the commission can already monitor nearly 50 channels from its Abuja facility.
Plans are underway to expand monitoring systems nationwide.As part of preparations, NBC will host a sensitisation workshop in Ibadan for broadcasters, INEC officials, security agencies, and other stakeholders.
Ebuebu stressed the importance of reminding broadcasters of professional guidelines, noting that election coverage often becomes heated and prone to ethical lapses.
“We have had to write several of them because they simply forget what the code says,” he said, assuring that compliance measures will be strengthened ahead of the polls.
The joint monitoring effort underscores the growing need for coordinated oversight in Nigeria’s evolving digital and broadcast landscape as the country prepares for the 2027 elections.
