Residents of Kaiama, Woro, Nuku and neighboring communities in Kwara North Senatorial District staged a peaceful protest on Friday, demanding urgent government action to rescue more than 100 victims who remain in captivity five months after a deadly attack.
During the February assault, about 179 residents were abducted and scores killed. Despite repeated appeals, families say little progress has been made toward securing the release of the victims.
Reacting to the protest, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara praised the courage of the demonstrators, describing their march as a powerful statement of patriotism.
The party criticized the state government’s silence, accusing Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq of failing to provide leadership in the face of a worsening security crisis.
In a statement, PDP spokesperson Olusegun Olusola Adewara said the protesters’ decision to appeal directly to President Bola Tinubu was “a vote of no confidence” in the governor.
He argued that when citizens bypass their state leader to seek help from Abuja, it signals a collapse of trust in local governance.
The PDP further noted that while President Tinubu has strengthened national security through funding, personnel deployment, and acquisition of military assets, Kwara’s government has not matched those efforts with visible action at the state level.
The party urged Governor AbdulRazaq to take ownership of the crisis, engage security agencies more proactively, and reassure families of the abducted victims.
It emphasized that the plight of the 176 captives comprising fathers, mothers, and children underscores the urgent need for decisive leadership.
