The Nigerian military has confirmed that a drone strike neutralized about 15 suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) during an intelligence-led operation in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the operation in a post on his X handle, citing military intelligence sources.
The strike took place at approximately 5:35 a.m. on Monday, July 21, after surveillance identified terrorist activity around KLA Balia in Marte.
An Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform, codenamed Guardian, detected three vehicles hidden at separate locations and observed five armed men taking cover under a tree.
A precision drone strike eliminated the visible suspects, triggering secondary explosions that reportedly killed additional fighters, bringing the estimated toll to 15.
Although a follow-up strike aimed at destroying the concealed vehicles was unsuccessful due to a laser targeting malfunction, military sources described the operation as a major success.
They noted that the strike inflicted heavy casualties on ISWAP and disrupted its logistics in the area.
Surveillance of the location continues, with further operations expected to target surviving insurgents and destroy remaining assets.
The action forms part of Operation HADIN KAI’s ongoing air interdiction campaign to dismantle terrorist enclaves and weaken insurgent networks across the Lake Chad region and the wider North-East.
