Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 elections, Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated Morocco on its impressive qualification for the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Morocco became the first African nation to reach the last eight of the ongoing tournament after securing a commanding 3-0 victory over Canada.
In a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, Atiku hailed the Atlas Lions for their outstanding performance, describing the achievement as a proud moment that has further elevated Africa’s profile on the global football stage.
“Congratulations to Morocco on a deserved 3-0 victory over Canada and on becoming the first African team to reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” Atiku wrote.
“You have once again lifted the hopes of an entire continent and reminded the world that African football belongs on the biggest stage.”
This latest feat builds on Morocco’s historic run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where they became the first African and Arab nation to reach the semi-finals.
The North African side has continued to establish itself as one of the continent’s football powerhouses.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is being jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Morocco’s strong showing has drawn widespread acclaim from football enthusiasts, sports administrators, and political leaders across Africa.
