Tinubu Hosts Vatican Envoy, Seeks Pope Leo XIV’s Visit to Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his desire to host Pope Leo XIV in Nigeria, describing the pontiff’s global peace efforts as vital in today’s world.

Tinubu made the remark on Saturday while receiving Paul R. Gallagher, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations, at the Presidential residence in Abuja.

Gallagher was ushered in by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.

According to a statement by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting peace, religious harmony, and tolerance among Nigeria’s diverse faith communities.

He described interfaith dialogue as the most effective path to tackling the country’s security challenges.

“I appreciate the Pope. It was an honour for me to lead the Nigerian delegation to his inauguration as Pope Leo XIV. It was a moment of history,” Tinubu was quoted as saying.

“I see his efforts all over the world to promote world peace. We need his spiritual engagement, as millions around the world look up to him. I look forward to receiving him in Nigeria.”

The President recalled his long-standing cordial relationship with the Catholic Church, which dates back to his time as Governor of Lagos State.

He highlighted the Church’s significant contributions to education and healthcare, noting that this influenced his decision to return mission schools to their original owners after they had been taken over during military rule.
