The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Abia State, Kelechi Anosike, has criticised Governor Alex Otti’s administration, saying it has fallen short in prioritising the welfare of ordinary citizens.
Speaking at a press conference at the PDP State Secretariat in Umuahia on Thursday, Anosike claimed that several key policies of the current government have had limited positive impact on the lives of residents, particularly civil servants, traders, and transporters.
He argued that the administration’s heavy focus on infrastructure development has come at the expense of critical areas such as cottage industries, pension matters, and other essential sectors that directly affect people’s daily livelihoods.
Anosike specifically highlighted the plight of civil servants, alleging that they are not being paid in line with the agreed National Labour Congress (NLC) and Federal Government minimum wage. He also claimed that the state government unjustly retired about 10,000 civil servants before they reached the mandatory 35 years of service or 60 years of age.
“10,000 civil servants were unjustly retired, we will review the policy,” Anosike stated.
The PDP candidate, who described himself as a welfarist, also condemned the recent ban on commercial motorcycle (okada) operations in Aba, saying it lacked a “human face.” He lamented that many people who relied on the business for survival were rendered jobless without any viable alternatives being provided.
If elected governor, Anosike promised to review the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment on local government autonomy to ensure funds meant for the local councils are properly utilised for the benefit of the people. He also pledged to deploy digital security screens across cities and forests in the state, funded through security votes, to enhance monitoring and security.
Anosike expressed confidence that the PDP remains the strongest opposition party ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial race and predicted that his party would defeat the incumbent Labour Party.
This criticism comes as political activities intensify in Abia State ahead of the next election cycle.
