Labour Party Unveils ₦2.8m Essay Competition in Abia


The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has launched a statewide essay competition for students in secondary and tertiary institutions, offering cash prizes totalling ₦2.8 million. 


The initiative aims to promote youth participation in governance and public policy, while encouraging young Abians to contribute ideas toward the state’s development. 


Unveiling the competition at the party’s secretariat in Umuahia on Thursday, the state secretary of the Labour Party, Barr. Chuks Akamadu, described it as the first of its kind by the Abia LP chapter. 


He said the exercise aligns with the party’s commitment to civic education, democratic values, equal opportunity, and responsible political participation.


“The exercise seeks to stimulate intellectual engagement among young Abians while generating practical ideas and policy recommendations that could contribute to governance and development,” Akamadu stated. 


He added that the Labour Party, being alive to its responsibilities in a democratic society, is committed to educating citizens and fostering greater youth involvement in the political process.


The essay topic is “The New Abia and Need for Consolidation.” It is designed to capture the perspectives of young people on the achievements of Governor Alex Otti’s administration and how these gains can be sustained. 


The competition is divided into two categories:

Category A (Secondary School Students): 1st prize – ₦500,000; 2nd – ₦300,000; 3rd – ₦250,000.  

Category B (Tertiary Institution Students): 1st prize – ₦1 million; 2nd – ₦500,000; 3rd – ₦250,000. 


Consolation prizes will be awarded to other outstanding participants, while the schools of the prize winners will receive special recognition.Entries, which must not exceed 1,500 words, should be submitted electronically to the party’s official email address on or before July 17, 2026. The prize presentation is scheduled for August 3. 


Akamadu commended Governor Alex Otti for the administration’s achievements over the past three years, which he said inspired the initiative.“The future of Abia belongs to our young people. Through this competition, we are giving them a voice to contribute to the political and developmental conversation shaping our state,” he added.
