The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has claimed that the Presidency’s repeated criticism of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, its 2027 presidential candidate, shows that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fearful of the upcoming election.
Reacting to recent comments by Presidential Spokesman Daniel Bwala, the opposition party said the constant attacks on Governor Makinde confirm that President Tinubu has lost the support of the majority of Nigerians.
In a statement on Thursday, APM National Publicity Secretary Abubakar Yusuf said the 2027 presidential race would pit Governor Makinde, backed by millions of Nigerians seeking a fresh start, against President Tinubu, who he claimed only enjoys “the feeble support of a handful of sycophantic and arrogant citizens.”
The party described the Presidency as intimidated by Makinde’s performance in Oyo State, saying the federal government lacks a tangible scorecard to present to Nigerians.
“President Tinubu should be jittery because Governor Makinde is coming into the contest with an intimidating record of performance,” the statement read.
It highlighted Makinde’s success in transforming Oyo State into one of the most economically viable states in the country, citing data from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) that reportedly shows it surpassing the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
APM said Nigerians are eager to elect Makinde to replicate his achievements at the national level, including revamping the economy, improving security, rebuilding infrastructure, revitalizing productive sectors, and fighting corruption.
The party lamented that dismissing a candidate with such widespread support as “inconsequential” only reveals the level of anxiety in the corridors of power.While refusing to be drawn into a war of words, APM said it would remain focused on issues.
It advised the Presidency’s spokespersons to engage Nigerians on substantive matters or encourage their principal to step aside if he has nothing substantial to offer.
