Protesters marched through the streets of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Tuesday, calling for the immediate release of kidnapped schoolchildren and teachers.
The demonstration, tagged “Bandits and Terrorists Must Go”, was led by social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan. The protesters demanded the unconditional release of victims abducted by bandits about a month ago.
VeryDarkMan had earlier urged Ibadan residents to join the protest, stressing the need for collective action to secure the freedom of the abducted students and teachers.
The protest comes after members of the Hausa community in Ibadan staged a separate demonstration over alleged ethnic profiling. Tensions have risen in the city following the abduction of more than 40 students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
Authorities continue to face mounting pressure from residents and activists to intensify efforts toward rescuing the victims and addressing the insecurity that has unsettled communities across Oyo State.
