A United States Congressman, Riley Moore, has applauded the Nigerian Senate for passing the State Police Bill, saying the reform will significantly help protect persecuted Christians in the country.
In a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, Moore stated that allowing states to establish their own police forces will empower them to better safeguard their citizens, particularly vulnerable Christian communities facing persecution.
The lawmaker made the comment shortly after the Senate approved the bill, which seeks to decentralise policing in Nigeria by permitting states to operate their own police services alongside the federal Nigeria Police Force.
Moore, who has previously raised concerns about attacks on Christians in Nigeria, described the passage of the bill as a critical step toward addressing the country’s insecurity challenges. He noted that he had advocated for this reform both publicly and privately since he began investigating what he termed the “genocide against Christians” in Nigeria.
“I can’t stress how critical this law that will empower states to protect their own citizens and reduce dependence on decision makers in Abuja is to the effort to defend persecuted Christians and address insecurity,” Moore wrote.
