Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central, has dismissed claims that Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, wields influence over the party’s internal decisions.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, Umeh addressed speculation that he was involved in manipulating positions within the NDC following the party’s recent primary elections.
“Peter Obi has not been involved in influencing who becomes what in the NDC. He’s somebody you can hardly see dragged into a process like this,” Umeh stated. He explained that Obi’s local government is politically aware and does not require his intervention in determining support.
Umeh emphasized that the NDC operates under established leadership, pointing to Senator Seriake Dickson as the party’s chairman. “It’s because he’s the leader of the party that made us join. I know his character, and I know he stands firm on national issues,” he added.
He further noted that Obi’s entry into the NDC, alongside former Kano governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso, triggered a surge of aspirants seeking positions. Umeh dismissed allegations of extortion during the primaries, saying those making such claims were simply disgruntled after failing to secure tickets.
