Rivers CP Removes Oyigbo DPO Over Alleged Extortion, Abuse of Office

Rivers State Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju has removed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Oyigbo Police Division following serious allegations of extortion and abuse of office.

The action came after a rights activist publicly accused the DPO on Friday of extorting ₦500,000 from a man who was arrested and detained at the station without any apparent offence.

The activist shared evidence of the payment on social media.

The activist also criticised the DPO for allegedly filing what he called a ridiculous charge against a woman involved in a dispute with her estranged husband.

She was accused of stealing her own children and subsequently remanded in a correctional facility.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Blessing Agabe, confirmed that the command had received the complaints.

She said the DPO was immediately removed to allow for a thorough and impartial investigation.

“The Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, Olugbenga Adepoju, expressed his deep dismay over the incident and reiterated that the command will not tolerate any form of misconduct, abuse of office, or actions capable of undermining public trust and confidence in the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement read.

The command emphasised its commitment to transparency, accountability, and professionalism, assuring the public that the investigation would be conducted diligently and without bias.

The name of the removed DPO has not been publicly released by the police command.
