The Nigeria Society of Criminology (NSC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government to urgently identify, arrest, and prosecute individuals involved in kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, and other violent crimes, as well as those financing these activities.
The society made the call in a statement issued after its recent deliberations on the worsening security situation in the country. It emphasised that decisive action against both the perpetrators and their sponsors is critical to restoring peace and public confidence.
Prof. Olukayode Tade, a leading criminologist and member of the NSC, specifically enjoined President Tinubu to ensure that bandits, terrorists, and their collaborators are fished out and prosecuted without further delay.
The group noted that while the government has made some efforts, the continued prevalence of these crimes indicates that more aggressive and intelligence-driven strategies are needed, particularly in tackling the financial networks that sustain criminal groups.
The NSC advised the Federal Government to strengthen inter-agency collaboration, improve intelligence gathering, and ensure swift judicial processes to deter would-be offenders.
It also stressed the importance of addressing root causes such as poverty, unemployment, and weak governance structures that enable criminality to thrive.
This latest appeal comes amid growing public frustration over persistent insecurity, with frequent reports of abductions, killings, and attacks on communities, schools, and farmlands across several states.
The criminologists warned that failure to decisively tackle both the operatives and their financiers could further undermine national stability and economic recovery efforts.
