Resident Doctors Issue 21-Day Ultimatum to FG Over Unpaid Allowances

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has given the federal government a 21-day ultimatum to resolve outstanding issues including unpaid allowances, salary arrears, delayed training funds, and worsening welfare conditions across the health sector.

In a communique released after its ordinary general meeting (OGM) in Kano, NARD declared an industrial dispute, warning that it could no longer guarantee industrial harmony if the demands remain unmet.

The statement was signed by Mohammad Suleiman (President), Shuaibu Ibrahim (Secretary-General), and Abdulmajid Yahya Ibrahim (Publicity Secretary).

The doctors demanded immediate payment of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF), settlement of salary and promotion arrears, and correction of discrepancies in professional allowances.

They also raised concerns about the welfare of house officers, citing salary delays, unpaid arrears, and unresolved internship placement challenges.

NARD accused the Federal Character Commission (FCC), led by Motunrayo Omidiran, of delaying compliance letters needed for recruitment in federal health institutions, worsening manpower shortages and brain drain.

The association further condemned rising cases of assaults and harassment against doctors, calling for the establishment of a national healthcare workers’ assault prevention and response protocol within the 21-day window.

Failure to act, NARD warned, could trigger nationwide industrial action, disrupting healthcare services across Nigeria.
