Police Nab 22-Year-Old for Spreading False Bandit Invasion Rumours in Osun

The Osun State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly circulating false information about a bandit invasion in the state, causing widespread panic among residents.

The suspect, identified as Odetayo Adebayo Samuel from Ila Orangun, was apprehended for posting a misleading video on his Facebook account on Monday, June 1, 2026, claiming that bandits had invaded Osun State.

In a statement issued on Friday in Osogbo by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the police said the post triggered unnecessary fear, leading to disruptions including early school closures in some areas.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the footage shared by the suspect actually showed members of the public restraining an individual with a mental illness,” Ojelabi explained.

The offence is said to be contrary to Section 24 of the Cybercrimes Act, 2015, and other relevant laws. The suspect was arrested on Wednesday but was later released following a passionate appeal by his aged parents. He has since tendered a public apology and was warned to desist from such actions.

The Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, cautioned residents against spreading unverified information capable of inciting fear or disturbing public peace.

He reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance on the misuse of social media to circulate harmful falsehoods.

This incident comes amid heightened sensitivity to security rumours across parts of Nigeria’s southwest region.
