The Office of the Senate President has refuted claims that Godswill Akpabio promised to secure All Progressives Congress (APC) tickets for senators who lost their primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Akpabio’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, described the reports as misleading and a misrepresentation of the Senate President’s remarks.
Eyiboh clarified that Akpabio neither made nor authorised any such promise to guarantee tickets for the affected senators.
“What the President of the Senate actually said, in the course of interacting with his colleagues, was to empathise with senators who were affected negatively by the outcome of their primary elections,” the statement read.
Akpabio had sympathised with his colleagues and assured them that the APC leadership was actively working to address issues arising from the primaries.
He noted that the final list of candidates would be released in due course in line with the party’s constitution and electoral guidelines.
The aide stressed that Akpabio remains committed to party discipline, due process, and the internal dispute-resolution mechanisms of the APC.
He added that the Senate President would not interfere in the party’s autonomous processes or make commitments outside his remit.
The clarification comes after Akpabio’s recent comments to senators, in which he expressed surprise at the high number of incumbents who lost their primaries and hinted at efforts to minimise “disappointments.” Those remarks had sparked speculation and anxiety among primary winners.
Eyiboh urged journalists and the public to seek clarification from the Senate President’s office before publishing stories relating to his comments.
