Peter Obi told me he Was More Popular Than Atiku - Dele Momodu

Veteran journalist and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Dele Momodu has disclosed that Peter Obi, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for 2027, once rejected suggestions to align with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, asserting that he was more popular.

Momodu made the revelation during an interview on Symfoni TV, recounting a personal conversation with Obi. He said he had urged Obi to consider partnering with Atiku, drawing parallels from politics in Ghana and the United States.

“Peter is the only politician who has visited my home in London, Ghana and Lagos,” Momodu stated.

He advised Obi by citing examples such as John Mahama’s rise in Ghana after serving as vice president and Joe Biden’s path to the U.S. presidency despite being older than Barack Obama.

According to Momodu, Obi pushed back, saying he had only served as a state governor but believed he was more popular than Atiku. “I swear to God. If you see him, ask him if I lied against him,” Momodu added.

Obi previously ran as Atiku’s vice-presidential candidate on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket in 2019. In 2023, he switched to the Labour Party and placed third in the presidential election behind Atiku and President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In 2025, Obi briefly joined Atiku and other opposition leaders like Rabiu Kwankwaso and Rotimi Amaechi in the ADC before defecting with Kwankwaso to the NDC amid internal coalition issues.

Both Atiku (ADC) and Obi (NDC) are now positioning themselves as presidential candidates for the 2027 elections.

Momodu’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about opposition strategies and realignments ahead of the next general polls.

He also shared views on the broader political landscape, including concerns among some governors about President Tinubu’s influence and criticisms of federal handling of Rivers State politics.
