Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has dismissed opposition criticism following his re-election, stressing that political victories are secured at polling units rather than on social media platforms.
In a video shared by Channels Television, Oyebanji likened his electoral success to a farmer reaping the rewards of diligent work, saying: “A farmer who has diligently tilled the ground does not need to fear the day of harvest.”
He accused some rivals of focusing on online campaigns instead of grassroots engagement, remarking: “Charlatans that have not done anything are busy on social media. They are not polling units on social media.”
Oyebanji argued that performance in office remains the ultimate determinant of electoral success. “If you have done well, people will vote for you. But if you don’t have anything to say other than granting interviews and whipping up sentiments, yesterday was the day of reckoning,” he said.
The governor also thanked Ekiti voters for their support, describing the outcome as the beginning of a new era of consensus, peace, and cooperation.
“Ekiti has taken a new course… consensus building, peace and harmony have become the trading currency of our political engagements,” he noted.
Promising more achievements in his second term, Oyebanji pledged to accelerate ongoing projects, tackle economic hardship, and pursue his administration’s “shared prosperity” agenda.
“With this renewed mandate, the best has just begun,” he declared. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier announced Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the election, with 319,224 votes across 16 local government areas.
His closest rival, Olumayokun Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party, polled 40,533 votes, while Dare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress secured 12,872 votes.
