JAMB Ends Affiliated Degree Programmes in Colleges of Education

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially scrapped admissions into affiliated degree programmes in Nigeria’s Colleges of Education, a move that reshapes the country’s teacher education system.

Beginning with the 2026/2027 academic session, the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) will become the sole entry route into these institutions.

According to JAMB’s newly released NCE/ND Agric Registration Guidelines, the Board stated: “No admission into any affiliated programme in any College of Education from 2026/7 Session.”

It further ruled out direct entry into 100- and 200-level courses, insisting that all new students must enroll through the NCE track.

For decades, affiliated degree programmes allowed Colleges of Education to partner with universities to award bachelor’s degrees.

This reform marks the end of that arrangement, affecting thousands of candidates who had applied for such programmes in the 2026 cycle.

To ease the transition, JAMB has offered candidates three options:

Change institution at no cost.Transfer to parent university where the affiliated programme was originally based.

Elevate second-choice institution to first choice for admission processing.Candidates seeking 100-level admission through UTME into affiliated Colleges of Education also face similar options, including migrating to the NCE programme.

Those who choose the NCE route must obtain an O’Level verification code and pay a ₦700 registration fee.JAMB has introduced mandatory O’Level verification for all NCE applicants, pegged at ₦1,500 for one sitting and ₦2,000 for two sittings.

The Board emphasized that once a candidate is recommended for NCE admission, any ongoing UTME or Direct Entry process will be suspended.

Institutions, CBT centres, and registration officials have been directed to strictly comply with the new guidelines.

This policy effectively re-establishes the NCE as the foundational qualification for teacher education in Nigeria, ending the era of affiliated degree programmes in Colleges of Education.
