Nobody is Doing NDC a Favour’ — Dickson Defends Party After Attacks by Obi Supporters

Seriake Dickson, national leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and senator representing Bayelsa West, has declared that the opposition party is doing its candidates a favour by providing them a platform to contest the 2027 elections, rather than the other way around.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, Dickson pushed back against suggestions that the NDC should be grateful to Peter Obi, its adopted presidential candidate, or any other political figure who joined the party.

“Don’t make it look like anyone is doing NDC a favour. No one is,” Dickson said. “Rather, the NDC and I and my colleagues are doing people a favour by granting our platform.”

He urged supporters of Peter Obi to stop disparaging the party or its leaders, warning that such attacks undermine the very platform carrying their candidate.

“If you are genuinely supporting Peter Obi and you are disparaging me, the leader, or the platform itself, that is nonsensical,” he added.

Dickson highlighted that the NDC adopted Obi as its sole presidential candidate and selected a running mate without any internal rancour or financial inducement.

“Nobody paid shishi. So, if a presidential candidate didn’t pay shishi to be made the sole presidential candidate... that same party cannot be the one saying that small people are underprivileged,” he said.

The former Bayelsa governor also rejected notions that he lacked the stature to run for president himself, insisting he was fully qualified but chose to back the current arrangement.

He emphasised that the NDC had already been attracting politicians and supporters nationwide before Obi and former Kano governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso joined the party, adding that its growth does not depend on any individual.

Dickson maintained there is no crisis within the NDC, describing Obi as “a cherished member of our party” and affirming that the party is working harmoniously with him.

The comments come amid reported tensions between some Obi supporters and NDC leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
