NLC Backs Teachers’ Strike, Demands Release of Abducted Pupils

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has thrown its weight behind the ongoing strike by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all abducted pupils and teachers.

In a statement on Wednesday, the NLC expressed solidarity with teachers over the rising wave of insecurity, particularly the recent abduction of schoolchildren and educators in Oyo State.

NLC President Joe Ajaero condemned the repeated attacks on schools and described the situation as unacceptable.

He urged the Federal and State Governments to take urgent and decisive action to secure the safe release of the victims and strengthen security around educational institutions.

The strike was triggered by the abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, 2026.

Gunmen attacked communities, including Community High School, Ahoro-Esinle, and other areas, leading to the kidnapping of dozens of students and several teachers. One teacher was reportedly killed during the incident.

The NUT declared an indefinite strike in Oyo State starting June 1, 2026, and has planned nationwide solidarity rallies to press the government for the rescue of the abducted victims.

The NLC warned that continued failure to address insecurity could further disrupt the education sector and erode public confidence in governance.

It called on all levels of government to move beyond rhetoric and implement concrete measures to protect lives, especially those of vulnerable children and teachers.
