The National Identity Management Commission has warned Nigerians against a fraudulent social media post claiming a free NIN correction portal is open for data changes.
In an advisory Tuesday on X, NIMC described the post and its links as a phishing scam “designed to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.”
“NIMC warns the public against a fraudulent social media post claiming a free ‘Correction Portal’ is open via malicious links. This is a phishing scam,” the commission said.
NIMC assured citizens the National Identity Database “is secure and fully protected” and urged people not to click unauthorized links.
The agency advised Nigerians to use only its official self-service portal or visit authorized enrollment centres nationwide for NIN updates or corrections. It asked users to verify all information through NIMC’s official communication channels.
The warning comes amid rising online scams targeting personal data, with fraudsters using fake websites and social media posts to lure victims.
NIMC urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious messages offering identity services outside approved platforms.
