Oyo State Police Command has arrested a pastor and a female resident for allegedly spreading false reports of a bandit attack in Lamini Community, Ido LGA.
Police said the suspects, Pastor Amos Muyiwa and Mulikat Bashiru, were picked up after investigations traced a viral WhatsApp voice note claiming six people were killed by armed bandits.
DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the state PPRO, said tactical units were deployed immediately after the message circulated widely on social media. “Investigations, however, showed that no such attack had taken place,” he stated.
According to police, Pastor Muyiwa recorded and shared the voice message without confirming its accuracy. Mulikat Bashiru was later linked as the source of the claim.
Both suspects are assisting investigators as police check if others were involved in creating or spreading the false alarm.
Ayanlade warned that misinformation threatens public safety:
“False security alerts can cause unnecessary panic, disrupt economic and social activities, and divert security personnel from genuine emergencies.”
He urged residents to verify information before sharing, especially on public safety issues.
