Iyabo Obasanjo Quits APC, Accuses Party of Disrespect, Maltreatment

Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, former senator for Ogun Central and daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing what she described as persistent disrespect and rejection by the party’s leadership in Ogun State.

In a letter dated May 31 and addressed to APC State Chairman Chief Yemi Sanusi, Obasanjo criticized the consensus process that produced Senator Solomon Adeola as the party’s governorship candidate for 2027, calling it a violation of APC’s own guidelines.

She alleged that her supporters were violently barred from the venue where Adeola’s candidacy was announced and lamented that she was not consulted despite being a major contender.

“No one acknowledged my presence at the meeting, even though I had mobilized grassroots support across Ogun Central,” she wrote.

Although she initially accepted the consensus decision for the sake of party unity and even congratulated Adeola, Obasanjo said the senator failed to honor promises made during a subsequent meeting with her supporters.

“When disrespect is the only dish served, then one should leave the table. I am therefore leaving the APC table where I am not welcome,” she declared.

Obasanjo, who returned to partisan politics in January by registering with APC in Ibogun Ward 11, expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, Chief Sanusi, and Ogun Central Senatorial Chairman Chief Soremi for their personal warmth toward her.

Her resignation comes amid speculation about her political comeback, fueled by campaign-style billboards in Abeokuta last year signaling her interest in the 2027 governorship race.
