A new crisis has emerged within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State, as North-West party leaders accuse former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of trying to dominate the party structure and marginalize members outside his Kwankwasiyya movement.
In a petition signed by North-West Vice Chairman Mohammed Serina and Kano State Chairman Hussaini Mariga, the leaders alleged that Kwankwaso, despite being welcomed into the party with significant influence, has sought total control of the Kano chapter.
They claimed tensions began during state congresses, where Kwankwaso allegedly pushed for full control.
A compromise was later reached, granting him 60 percent of the structure while the party retained 40 percent.
However, disputes resurfaced during the nomination process, with accusations that Kwankwaso withheld forms for elective offices from non-Kwankwasiyya members.
According to Serina, none of the 40 state assembly forms, 24 House of Representatives forms, three senatorial forms, or the governorship form was allocated to aspirants outside Kwankwaso’s loyalists.
He said appeals for inclusivity were rejected, prompting petitions to the party’s national leader, Seriake Dickson, and the National Working Committee.
The leaders warned that exclusion of founding members and other stakeholders was fueling disaffection, insisting that “no individual possesses an exclusive monopoly over political wisdom or electoral viability in Kano State.”
Reacting, Kwankwasiyya spokesman Habibu Muhammed dismissed the allegations as baseless, maintaining that nomination forms were sold by the party, not by Kwankwaso’s group.
He insisted no aspirant was denied access.Despite interventions by Dickson and the NWC, the dispute remains unresolved, with accusations that Kwankwaso is threatening to leave the party unless granted full control of the Kano structure.
