INEC trains party officials on electronic candidate nomination for 2027 elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced a two-day training programme for officials of political parties on the use of the INEC candidate nomination portal (ICNP) in preparation for the 2027 general election.

Speaking at the opening of the training in Abuja on Thursday, Bayode Lawrence, INEC’s director of information, communication, and technology (ICT), said the initiative was designed to equip political party officials with the knowledge and procedures in the nomination and electronic submission of candidates’ documents.

Lawrence, represented by Anthonia Idemudia, deputy director of ICT, said the training is important for officials participating in the process to reduce avoidable challenges and ensure a hitch-free nomination exercise.

May Agbamuche-Mbu, chairperson of the legal services, clearance, and complaint committee (LSC&CC) at INEC, described candidate nomination as a fundamental stage of the electoral process.

Agbamuche-Mbu, who was represented by Ibrahim Sani, acting director-general of the Electoral Institute, noted that the success of any election begins with the proper nomination of candidates.

She said political parties must fully understand and comply with the legal and procedural requirements guiding the process.

“Nomination of candidates remains one of the most critical stages of the electoral process. Indeed, it is the foundation upon which elections are conducted. Without duly nominated candidates, there can be no electoral contest,” Agbamuche-Mbu said.

She added that the 2026 Electoral Act places responsibility on political parties to submit details of their sponsored candidates within the stipulated timelines and in the approved format.

Agbamuche-Mbu said the training is timely due to the release of the INEC’s timetable and schedule of activities, noting that candidate nomination is scheduled to commence on June 27.

“Compliance at the nomination stage contributes significantly to reducing disputes, enhancing certainty, and strengthening public confidence in the electoral process,” she said.

“The success of the 2027 general election begins with adequate preparation, and this training is an important part of that preparation.”
