The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that confidential voter information belonging to Nollywood actor and House of Representatives aspirant, Emeka Ike, was leaked using valid staff credentials.
The disclosure was made in a statement on Tuesday by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
How the Leak Happened
The controversy began after Ike’s voter registration details surfaced online shortly after he announced his intention to contest a seat in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under the National Democratic Coalition (NDC).
The records were shared publicly by Lere Olayinka, the media aide to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Following an internal investigation, INEC revealed:
No Hacking Involved: There was no external breach or hacking of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) database.
Insider Access: The data was accessed using legitimate user credentials assigned to registration officers for the ongoing nationwide CVR exercise.
Audit Trail: INEC used its digital audit trail to pinpoint the exact user account responsible for retrieving the unauthorized information.
Current Status & Next Steps
INEC stated that relevant personnel have already been questioned, and all connected units are cooperating with the internal probe to determine if access-control protocols were breached.
Security Intervention: The Department of State Services (DSS) has launched an independent investigation into the matter to establish criminal responsibility.
