The lawmaker representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State, Ikenga Ugochinyere, has been nominated as the new Minority Leader of the House of Representatives.
Ugochinyere’s nomination was endorsed by 61 lawmakers drawn from various opposition parties.
This development comes after Ugochinyere’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Action Peoples Party (APP) in January.
He will succeed Kingsley Chinda, who vacated the minority leader position following his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and subsequent emergence as the party’s governorship candidate in Rivers State.
In a letter dated June 3, 2026, addressed to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, opposition lawmakers from parties including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Labour Party (LP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Accord, affirmed Ugochinyere’s nomination as the preferred choice of the majority of opposition members.
The letter was signed by lawmakers across multiple states, reflecting broad support for Ugochinyere’s leadership within the opposition caucus.
With this nomination, Ugochinyere is set to play a key role in shaping opposition strategy in the House ahead of the 2027 general elections.
