Gunmen Shoot Osun Accord Chairman, Police Launch Probe

The Osun State Police Command has opened an investigation into the shooting of Accord Party chairman in Osogbo Local Government Area, Asimiyu Ajibola, who was attacked by suspected gunmen on Wednesday night.

Ajibola was shot around 9:50 pm in the MDS area of Osogbo by two armed men on a motorcycle.

He was rushed to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital where doctors confirmed he is in stable condition and responding to treatment.

Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi said operatives responded swiftly to a distress call, evacuated the victim, and launched a manhunt for the attackers.

“Other operational teams have begun an aggressive pursuit of the fleeing suspects. Preliminary investigation at the scene led to the recovery of exhibits now undergoing forensic analysis,” Ojelabi stated.

Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan has ordered a high-level probe, directing investigative units to deploy all resources to identify and arrest those behind the attack.

Meanwhile, the Osun State Government condemned the incident. Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi, described the shooting as “an unfortunate incident with elements of political colouration” and urged security agencies to ensure the culprits are brought to justice.

“The culprits must be brought to book. We call on the police to carry out their investigation professionally, without fear or favour,” Alimi said.

The case has heightened political tension in Osun, with authorities assuring the public that no stone will be left unturned in the ongoing investigation.
