Security was heightened around the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday as anti-riot police cordoned off the main gates following a planned protest led by activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.
Our correspondent observed a heavy deployment of officers in full riot gear at the Villa’s entrance, restricting access only to individuals with official State House identification.
Others attempting to approach were turned back. The security build-up comes after Sowore announced that the AAC and its Take It Back Movement would march from Eagle Square to the Villa under the hashtag #OccupyAsoRock.
The protest was scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 4.Sowore said the march was to demand the immediate rescue of abducted schoolchildren from Oyo and Borno States, warning that President Tinubu must secure their release or resign for failing in his duty to protect Nigerians.
“You cannot claim to be president of Nigeria and then refuse to do the job of Commander-in-Chief. We are not here to beg anybody. We are asking elected leaders to do their work,” Sowore declared earlier in the week.
The planned protest follows the May 15 abductions of 39 students and seven teachers in Oyo State, alongside the kidnapping of 42 pupils in Borno.
In response, the federal government dispatched a delegation led by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila and announced the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards as part of a specialised rescue operation.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Teachers declared an indefinite strike in Oyo beginning June 1, with solidarity rallies held nationwide on June 2 to press for urgent action.
