Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory in Nigeria’s Senate, has stated that she did not see or review the committee report that resulted in the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central).
Kingibe made the disclosure during a Wednesday interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme. She explained that she was attending a tax reform retreat at the time the report was considered by the Senate.
“I never saw the report that led to Natasha’s suspension. I was at a retreat,” she said. Kingibe noted that she had previously mentioned being with three or four other senators who were members of the relevant committee.
According to her account, she and some colleagues attended a session of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, signed the attendance register, and then left for the tax reform retreat, which she viewed as more important for her constituents.
“We attended the Committee on Petitions and Public Complaints, signed the attendance register, and I later left for the tax reform retreat, which I considered more important at the time. It affects my constituents much more than disciplining a senator,” Kingibe added.
She further revealed that she had complained bitterly to some colleagues, including Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, about not having access to the report. “I have not seen it till now,” she emphasised.
The suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has sparked significant public debate, legal challenges, and questions about the Senate’s disciplinary processes. Kingibe’s remarks add to the controversy, especially after Senator Adams Oshiomhole alleged that signatures of some senators, including possibly Kingibe’s, may have been improperly included or forged on the report.
