Man Arrested in Poland Over Killing of Putin’s Critic

Polish authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of Russian artist and outspoken Kremlin critic Semyon Skrepetsky, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Thursday.

The arrest comes days after the artist, whose real name was Robert Kuzovkov, was fatally shot in the eastern Polish town of Biala Podlaska on Monday. According to reports, the victim was shot three times by an armed assailant and then approached on the ground for two additional shots at close range in what appeared to be a targeted killing.

The detained man is reported to be using a Georgian passport, Tusk said on X (formerly Twitter). Polish services are continuing their investigation to identify who may have ordered the killing.

Tusk had previously described the death as a likely “political murder” and warned that if Russia was behind it, the case would carry serious international implications. Polish officials had reportedly offered Skrepetsky protection in the past, which he declined.

Two Belarusian citizens were initially detained in relation to the case but were later released.

Skrepetsky, who fled Russia in 2021 citing fears of political persecution, was known for his provocative caricatures mocking Russian leaders including Vladimir Putin, Joseph Stalin, Ramzan Kadyrov, and even some opposition figures. One of his notable works reimagined a classical Orthodox icon with Stalin cradling Putin.

In exile, he continued to participate in Russian opposition events while maintaining a critical stance toward aspects of the opposition itself. Several critics of the Russian government have faced attacks or assassinations abroad in recent years, with Moscow consistently denying involvement.
