Gunmen suspected to be Fulani militia ambushed and killed a traditional ruler in Plateau State on Wednesday evening.
The victim, Saf Samuel Alaket, the District Head of Gwande in Bokkos Local Government Area, was attacked while returning from a traditional council meeting at the council headquarters.
According to eyewitnesses, the assailants ambushed the monarch’s vehicle around 7:30 pm near the boundary between Sha District and Daffo community, close to his hometown, and opened fire on the vehicle. He sustained severe gunshot injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.
A community leader and member of the late monarch’s council, Peter Gwande, described the killing as a painful loss not only to Gwande community but to the entire Bokkos Local Government Area and Plateau State. He said the incident has thrown the Bokkos Traditional Council and residents into mourning.
Christopher Luka, a youth leader in Gwande community, noted that the attack created serious tension in the area, but security operatives have since brought the situation under control.
Efforts to get a reaction from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, did not respond to calls or text messages.
The killing adds to the growing insecurity in parts of Plateau State, where attacks on communities and traditional leaders have become recurrent.
