FG Vows Action Against Côte d’Ivoire Over Nigerian’s Death in Prison

The Federal Government of Nigeria has vowed to take decisive action against Côte d’Ivoire following the death of a Nigerian national in Ivorian custody.

The government expressed strong concern over the circumstances surrounding the death, describing it as unacceptable and demanding full accountability from Ivorian authorities.

Officials indicated that diplomatic channels are being activated to seek justice and prevent recurrence of such incidents.

This development comes amid ongoing consular cases involving Nigerians detained in Côte d’Ivoire.

Recently, the Nigerian government secured the release of six nationals who had been held since October 2025 over alleged economic crimes, following sustained diplomatic engagements by the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan.

Reports from the period of negotiations highlighted that several Nigerian detainees faced difficult conditions, with some sources indicating multiple deaths in custody, which has heightened calls for stronger diplomatic intervention and thorough investigations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) and the embassy, has been actively involved in protecting the welfare of Nigerian citizens abroad.

Authorities reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to safeguarding its nationals and ensuring that any lapses in justice or human rights in foreign jurisdictions are addressed firmly.

Further details on the specific case and the nature of the vowed actions are expected as diplomatic consultations continue.

The government urged Nigerians in the diaspora to remain vigilant and report any consular issues promptly to enable timely intervention.
