271 Nigerians Evacuated from South Africa Arrive Safely in Lagos

A fresh batch of 271 Nigerians evacuated from South Africa has landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The returnees arrived on Tuesday morning aboard an Air Peace flight as part of the Federal Government’s ongoing voluntary repatriation programme.

The exercise is aimed at assisting citizens willing to return home amid renewed xenophobic tensions and anti-immigration protests in South Africa.

Officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) were on ground to receive the evacuees.

This latest group forms part of the third batch of returnees. The flight departed Johannesburg early Tuesday and touched down in Lagos shortly before 11 a.m.

The Federal Government had announced the evacuation the previous day, noting that thousands more Nigerians remain stranded in South Africa.

Authorities indicated that additional flights are planned, with up to 700 more citizens potentially evacuated in the coming weeks depending on the security situation on the ground.

Many of the returnees cited safety concerns, economic hardships, and rising hostility as reasons for opting to return home under the government-assisted programme.
