The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Owerri Zone, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the governors of Imo and Anambra states to fully implement the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU Agreement or face an indefinite strike in their state-owned universities.
The union warned that it would shut down academic activities at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam in Anambra State, and Imo State University (IMSU) if Governors Chukwuma Soludo and Hope Uzodinma fail to act within the deadline.
Addressing journalists on Monday at the ASUU Conference Hall of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Owerri Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Dennis Aribodor, expressed disappointment that more than five months after the agreement began implementation in many parts of the country, the two institutions are yet to comply.
Aribodor said the branches at COOU and IMSU submitted the agreement to their university administrations in February 2026, in line with a directive from ASUU’s National Executive Council.
He noted that the National Universities Commission had also communicated the agreement to the governors, who are visitors to the universities, and their vice-chancellors.
The agreement covers critical issues including salary deficits, infrastructure development, and staff welfare.“Failure to implement the agreement within 14 days, we are going to embark on an indefinite strike,” Aribodor warned.
He highlighted that several other states , including Bauchi, Benue, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, and Sokoto have already commenced implementation, and criticised Anambra and Imo for the delay, which he said is worsening lecturers’ welfare and contributing to the exodus of academics from South-East universities.
The ASUU Chairman at COOU, Ibekilo Bruno, disclosed that the university needs about ₦300 million monthly to pay academic staff salaries, while IMSU ASUU Chairman, Stephen Oguji, said the institution requires about ₦1 billion to adequately cater for the welfare of both academic and non-academic staff.
The union appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups, parents, and other stakeholders to prevail on the two governors to implement the agreement and prevent industrial disharmony.
