Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on Nigeria’s 36 state governors to take greater responsibility for tackling insecurity in their respective domains instead of placing the entire burden on President Bola Tinubu.
Okpebholo made the call on Tuesday during an All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders’ interactive session at Okaijesan Town Hall in Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State.
According to a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, the governor stressed that security is a collective responsibility that requires action at all levels of government.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu cannot come to Edo or visit all the states at the same time because he is just one person. If I protect Edo State and every other governor protects their states, insecurity will become a thing of the past,” Okpebholo said.
He criticised those who solely blame the President for the country’s security challenges, describing such criticism as unfair and an attempt to ignore the constitutional roles of state governors.
The Edo governor also took a swipe at opposition figures who had previously held executive positions, questioning their own records on security while in office.
“Many governors are working hard to solve security challenges across the nation. Governors should take charge of their various states and address the security situation. This is what is called sub-national responsibility, and it will help solve the problem,” he added.
Okpebholo maintained that if state governments show greater commitment to protecting lives and property, insecurity would be significantly reduced nationwide.
