Emir Sanusi: No Child’s Future Should Be Defined by Poverty

The Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has urged leaders in Nigeria’s North-West to take urgent and sustained action against poverty and inequality, stressing that no child’s future should be determined by the circumstances of their birth.

Delivering a keynote address at the High-Level North-West Policy Dialogue in Kano, Sanusi emphasized that societies are measured by how they expand opportunity and protect the vulnerable.

“No child’s future should be foreclosed by the poverty of their birth,” he said.Sanusi warned that poverty in the region remains entrenched, reflected in poor education outcomes, weak health systems, child malnutrition, and high unemployment.

He called for strong political will and consistent investment in people, particularly children and youth.

Among his recommendations were:Long-term social investment frameworks in each state, with protected budgets for health, education, social protection, and youth development.

Minimum social packages to guarantee basic services across life stages.Greater focus on early childhood development, including nutrition, early learning, and parental support.

Expanded programmes for out-of-school children, adult literacy, and youth skills training.Stronger use of traditional institutions for community data gathering and programme delivery.

Improved accountability measures, with governments publishing annual results of social investments.

He cautioned that without honest leadership and sustained action, poverty in the North-West would continue to deepen, affecting future generations.
