Ecuador Declares Holiday After Historic World Cup Win Over Germany

Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa has declared a nationwide public holiday to celebrate the country’s stunning 2-1 victory over Germany at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The win, secured at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on June 25, propelled Ecuador into the knockout stage for only the second time in its history, matching its achievement at the 2006 tournament.

In a post on X, Noboa praised the team’s resilience: “Thanks to the players and the coach who, despite the criticism, the insults, and the tough times they went through, managed to bounce back and bring this immense joy to the entire country. Tomorrow, holiday! Long live Ecuador.”

Match highlights: Germany struck first in the 2nd minute through Leroy Sané, but Ecuador equalised quickly with Nilson Angulo’s 9th-minute goal. Gonzalo Plata sealed the win in the 77th minute.

Group stage journey: Ecuador had lost 1-0 to Ivory Coast and drawn 0-0 with Curaçao in earlier matches, making the victory over Germany decisive for qualification.

National celebration: The holiday declaration underscores the symbolic importance of the triumph, uniting the nation behind its football team.

The result is being hailed as one of Ecuador’s greatest football achievements, with fans and officials celebrating the team’s progress to the round of 16.
