Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday visited Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Vice-Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), at his residence in Kano State.
Kwankwaso, who was joined by NDC’s Kano governorship candidate Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, received Obasanjo in what his media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, described as a cordial meeting marked by warm exchanges.
Although details of the closed-door discussions were not disclosed, the visit has stirred speculation about possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Longstanding ties: Kwankwaso previously served as Minister of Defence during Obasanjo’s second term (2003–2007), maintaining a close political relationship with the former president.
The meeting comes amid reports of efforts to strengthen opposition alliances, with NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi widely seen as a close ally of Obasanjo.
Obasanjo’s involvement has fueled debate over his potential role in shaping opposition strategies ahead of the polls.
While the specifics remain undisclosed, the encounter signifies ongoing maneuvering among Nigeria’s political heavyweights as the 2027 elections draw closer.
