Corpse Found in Car Near Iran’s World Cup Training Base in Tijuana, Mexico

A decomposing body was discovered in the trunk of a car parked directly across from the stadium where Iran’s national football team is training for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.

According to AFP journalists at the scene, the grim find occurred on Friday in the parking lot of a supermarket opposite Caliente Stadium in Tijuana.

Police opened the trunk of a gray Toyota SUV with California license plates, revealing a body wrapped in a black bag and showing signs of violence.

Specialists in protective suits examined the vehicle before removing the remains. Tijuana prosecutors said the car was believed to have been abandoned on Wednesday. The discovery was made by a routine patrol unit.

The Iranian team (Team Melli) relocated its training camp to Tijuana after visa complications prevented them from basing in Arizona.

The squad has been under heavy security, escorted by armed soldiers between their hotel and the stadium as they prepare for Group G matches in the United States.

The Iranian convoy reportedly left the stadium shortly after the body was removed. There was no immediate comment from the team on the security arrangements.

Tijuana, located on the U.S.-Mexico border, is one of Mexico’s most violent cities due to powerful drug cartels, recording over 1,200 homicides in 2025. The country continues to grapple with one of the world’s highest murder rates.

Authorities have described the incident as a local criminal matter with no apparent link to the Iranian team or the ongoing World Cup.
