There was confusion in the House of Representatives on Tuesday as Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read a letter announcing the defection of Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement comes after Chinda had already emerged as the governorship candidate of the APC in Rivers State. However, the defection letter read by the Speaker was dated April 23, 2026, raising questions about the timing and process.
Following the announcement, Chinda resigned his position as Minority Leader of the House. The House is now expected to elect a new Minority Leader.
Chinda is facing a lawsuit challenging the validity of his defection, with claims that due process was not followed.
