Nigeria and China have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cultural diplomacy and bilateral friendship through the promotion of Wushu (traditional Chinese martial arts).
The partnership was highlighted on Tuesday during the Wushu Premium Exhibition held at the China Cultural Centre in Abuja, drawing key diplomats, media executives, and sports officials.
Cultivating Peace Beyond Sport
Yang Jianxing, the Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy and Director of the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, emphasized that cultural exchange is a vital bridge for international cooperation.
He noted that Wushu transcends physical sport, acting as a cultural language that embodies values of respect, virtue, and harmony.
“The true spirit of martial arts lies not only in physical skills, but also in moral cultivation and personal growth,” Jianxing stated, adding that the ultimate philosophy of Wushu is the prevention of conflict rather than its pursuit.
The event featured interactive sessions and live demonstrations led by Professor Wu Dong and an expert team from Beijing Sport University, offering Nigerian participants a firsthand experience of Chinese culture.
Expanding Media and Sports Collaboration
The diplomatic initiative received strong support from Nigerian media and sports representatives:
Media Reach: Abiodun Ogidan, Director of Programmes at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), praised the collaboration. He highlighted the success of the weekly Ni Hao radio program, which broadcasts Mandarin lessons and Chinese cultural insights across FRCN’s network of over 47 stations nationwide.
Sports Diplomacy: Representing the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (Shehu Dikko), Musa Ahmadu emphasized that sports bridge differences and connect cultures in ways formal diplomacy cannot. He affirmed the commission's intent to leverage sports for international cooperation and youth engagement.
Looking ahead, the Chinese Embassy pledged to continue expanding joint initiatives with Nigeria across language education, tourism, arts, and youth exchanges.
